Land Remediation

Overview

In 2010 A&P Tyne commissioned Shield to assist with a land remediation project within the dockyard, following the discovery of large quantities of historic asbestos insulation debris buried within an area of land earmarked for redevelopment.

The asbestos that was unearthed was still in its original import bags and ranged from floor tiles, cement products and insulation board to pure Blue asbestos still in the original hessian sacks. As well as the bagged material, loose asbestos debris was also present in some areas of the site.

Shield assisted A&P’s contaminated land consultant with the formulation of a remediation strategy and further provided on-site personnel to conduct the removal of the asbestos from the affected area. Shield supervised and controlled other remediation/groundwork contractors working on the site to ensure that risks of inadvertent exposure to asbestos fibres from the buried debris were reduced as far as reasonably practicable.
