McCarthy & Stone Retirement Lifestyles, Mount Pleasant

Demolition & Dismantling, Recycling, Asbestos Removal & Remediation

Overview

Shield has previously carried out asbestos removal projects for McCarthy and Stone Retirement Homes but in October 2013 we carried out our first joint Demolition and Asbestos Removal project for them.

The project involved the demolition of 5 domestic properties, asbestos removal, site clearance of vegetation and trees as well as the crushing of concrete and masonry to produce fill material to the client’s specification.

The site at Mount Pleasant in Ringwood, Hampshire, had live services running through and along the perimeter, there was a live gas main, overhead electric cables and a buried HV cable that all had to be carefully considered before carrying out the works. Protection of the live services was agreed with the relevant utilities providers and all the risks were managed and controlled effectively.

During the clearance of the building slabs and foundations we found that they were not strip footings and substructure blockwork, as you would expect on these types of buildings, but mass concrete foundations. To resolve the issue and meet the client’s programme a demolition excavator was fitted with a breaker attachment and was on site the following day to assist with the removal of the concrete.

Despite the additional works and materials generated the project was completed within the clients agreed programme and budget. We estimate that in excess of 95% of the materials generated through the demolition project have either been recycled or will be recycled.
